Abstract: This paper introduces a methodology to prepare digital maps of bed material composition in rivers with inhomogeneous bed material, which can be used in riverine habitat assessment studies. The method combines information from physical bed material samplings and results from three-dimensional computational flow modeling. The main idea is to set up a relationship between measured characteristic grain sizes and calculated bed shear stress values at the sampling locations. Once a strong relationship can be suggested, the calculated bed shear stress field can be used to extend the grain size distribution over the study domain. The influence of varying flow regimes on the bed shear stress field is also considered. As the bed material composition plays a relevant role in habitat characterization of river reaches, this method can contribute to a more accurate, detailed assessment of the habitat.
