Comparing Marine and Fresh Waters - Using a Linkage Framework to Assess Multiple Activity-Pressure-Ecosytem Component Relations

Abstract: Across the world, both marine and fresh water ecosystems are affected by a multitude of human induced stressors. In an attempt to indicate and assess interrelations between societal demands and ecosystem service supply this study picks up a Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) approach. Using a linkage framework that forms a complex network of so-called impact chains from human activities via pressures to ecosystem components, we will focus on the demand of society on aquatic ecosystems. In weighting the impact chains and implementing a score, the linkage framework will identify influential activities, severe pressures and at risk habitats. This enables a comparison of entirely different systems demonstrated by the Danube River Basin as a freshwater example and the North Sea as a marine case study. We will show how the linkage framework can be used as an important decision-making support tool for ecosystem-based management.
