Abstract: Following the concepts of the Natural Flow Paradigm, a flow component-based integrated environmental flow assessment method is raised in order to restore river health. The method combines key flow components with natural and social attributes. There are four natural flow components including base flow, high flow pulse, flood and drought (MA, 2014) that could be separated from long-term hydrograph with little or limited human interference. Natural flow component statistics were then coupled with social flow components (eg: water quality requirement, river sand flushing discharge, river discharge capacity requirement) to obtain the environmental flow. This method is applied to lower reach of the Yellow river trunk. Environmental flows of Huayuankou section for different hydrological years are calculated.
