Abstract: Seagrasses provide several ecosystem services, some of which give the title to seagrass of soft measure of coastal protection. One of this services is sediment trapping, or the enhancement of sedimentation. This is a physical process that also serves as a survival mechanism for seagrasses. In order to understand the role of seagrasses within sediment transport, experiments are performed in a recirculation flume using artificial seagrass using different current velocities. Point measurements of the bed elevation are done with acoustic sensors in order to observe the development of the bed with time around the seagrass meadow. Preliminary results show deposition within the meadow, albeit low shoot density, and also behind the meadow, whereas erosion predominates the area in front of the seagrass patch.
