Abstract: To elucidate the ecological traits and impact of smallmouth bass in Japanese streams, we conducted a wide range survey on fish distribution and abundance in the midstream reaches of the Chikuma River during fall of 2016. Among 661 individuals caught by cast nets, smallmouth bass was third abundant (19%) species, occurring at the most sites, to barbel (44%) and chub (23%) in the middle reaches. Sites with lower velocity comprised larger number of smallmouth bass, where the number of smallmouth bass and major cyprinids were negatively correlated. Our results indicate that smallmouth bass occupy slower flow habitats as pools or runs and may have negative impact on native cyprinid in terms of predation and competition in the middle reaches of Japanese streams.
