Abstract: We studied distribution of macroinvertebrates in a small lowland, low dynamic European river in NE Poland in relation to different patterns of groundwater-surface water interactions in the hyporheic zone. On the 4-km stretch of the river we determined variability of water exchange in the hyporheic zone with the use of direct field measurements of water temperature supported by modelling of groundwater-surface water interactions along the river stretch. Preliminary findings allow to suspect that bottom-dwelling macroinvertebrate fauna is more abundant and diverse in river stretches where infiltration of water from river to hyporheic zone occurs.
