Seasonal Variation and Decomposition of Cyanobacteria (Microcystis Spp. ) at Lake Kasumigaura

Abstract: Cyanobacterial blooms, especially Microcystis spp., cause problems such as deteriorating visual appearance or bad smells at Tsuchiurairi Bay, Lake Kasumigaura. In this study, we focused on Microcystis cells in lake sediments. Microcystis spp. are known to cause water blooms. We aimed to elucidate the seasonal variation and decomposition of deposited Microcystis. Our results indicated that the density of Microcystis cells in the sediment affects the density of Microcystis cells in the water during summer. Microcystis cells were found in lake sediments before Microcystis blooms. After the Microcystis bloom, Microcystis cells accumulated in sediments. Our results show that Microcystis cells in the water settled with suspended solid and that Microcystis cells in sediments decomposed anaerobically 12 days after.
