Physical, Chemical, and Biological Aspects of Phosphorus in Lakes and Reservoirs

Abstract: Phosphorus (P) is one of the most important nutrients for all living organisms. In aquatic environments, P is usually associated with particles of sediment or suspended one. Such particulate bound P is released to water affected by chemical and biological environments. The mechanisms of P release to water differ between the processes. For example, if P is adsorbed on the mineral particles, Fe-bound P is released to water by chemical processes, such as redox and pH fluctuations, whereas if P is associated with organic matters, biological processes (i. e. enzymatic hydrolysis). In the current session, we associate these studies about sediment and suspended particles in terms of physical, chemical, and biological aspects.
