Abstract: Whether the dam removal really contributes to the improvement of river ecological environment, it requires us to analyze and study according to the actual situation instead of blindly implementing the dam removal scheme. In regulated dam removal, managers must evaluate the ecological implication during dam removal period. Here, we discuss the differences in ecological implication during pre-and post-dam removal period based on River2D habitat modelling. In the first part of this paper, the hydrodynamic parameters variation is evaluated by comparing the pre-with post-dam removal period (Heiyu reservoir, Xiaohezi River, China). In the second part, taking the Baetis thermicus as a typical target invertebrate, the habitat suitability for the Xiaohezi River case study (affect by depth and velocity) is analyzed by comparing different flow regime scenarios. The results show that the value of WUA in post-dam removal period are always higher than those in pre-dam removal period under the same flow condition. Based on the research and analysis in this paper, removing the dam has improved the suitable habitat area of target creature and can also provide certain reference for subsequent dam removal activities.
