Abstract: The proposed ISO 19906 Arctic Structures Standard presents guidelines for local pressures due to massive ice features having a thickness in excess of 1.5m and where crushing is the mode of failure. In this paper, data collected using flatjack loading systems and other medium scale tests where crushing did not dominate are compared to these ice crushing pressures. It is found that pressures comparable with or greater than the ISO recommendations have been observed up to a contact area of 5m2. The interpretation of the data illustrates that various pressure-area relationships occur with an exponent ranging between 0.0, i. e. no scale effect, up to a value of -0.7 for the crushing failures. It is suggested that warm first-year sea ice could exert pressures larger than the ISO recommendations.
