Abstract: The stability of a grounded rubble field can be difficult to assess. At first glance this may seem to be a trivial item, yet the stability of ice rubble can play a key role in the evacuation plans for an offshore structure and the loads transmitted to the structure. A variety of definitions for the stability of rubble have been used in the past, such as: ·the presence of landfast ice surrounding a rubble field·the amount of sliding resistance the rubble imparts·the degree of grounding across the rubble field from buoyancy calculations of the rubble·relationships derived from field experience with rubble fields.
