Abstract: Interaction between conical structure and unconsolidated ice rubble was simulated in 3D. Discrete element method (DEM) with rigid discrete elements representing ice blocks was used. In total 31 simulations were run in full scale with various ridge velocities, ridge keel widths and ridge keel depths. To study the influence of the boundary conditions, each parameter study was performed with three different model set-ups. The failure process of the simulated ridge keels was studied by observing the rubble displacement during the simulation run. The simulation results were compared to full scale data and to results from an analytical ridge load model for cones.
