Abstract: Long-term observational data on spring solar radiation regime over the ice-covered boreal lake Vendyurskoe (Karelia, Russia) are used to evaluate temporal and spatial variability of the parameters that characterise seasonal ice melting. The ranges of variations in the albedo of snow and ice for a wide spectrum of the state of surface and weather conditions are presented. The surface albedo values are shown to vary significantly through winter, and also in space during the melting season. The variability of the thickness and structure of snow-and-ice cover is analysed for different periods in winter. Melting rates for different types of ice are estimated and compared on the inter-annual level. The results of field experiments aimed to determine the rate of absorption of solar radiation by snow and ice are presented. The effective coefficients of absorption of solar radiation by snow and ice are evaluated.
