Abstract: This paper discusses the change of electrical resistance of air, ice, and water due to temperature variation and proposes a resistance-based approach for detecting the thickness of the ice layer, the scope of the ice-water mix layer, and the water level. We developed a resistance-based river ice detection system and carried out on-site experiments to detect the ice conditions. With the developed system, online constant monitoring of river ice conditions could be accomplished.
