Abstract: The action from ice ridge keels on structures is studied by experimental, analytical and numerical methods, respectively. The experimental method involves 1:20 scale model tests of ice ridge interaction with a simple conical structure. The analytical method involves keel load calculations using recommendations provided in ISO/FDIS 19906 as well as minimal necessary updates to account for geometry of the structure. The numerical method involves coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian finite element simulations. It is demonstrated that ISO recommendations are insufficient and potentially underconservative with regard to calculation of loads from wide ridge keels on simple conical structures (at model scale). It is shown how numerical methods can be used to better understand the behaviour of ridges keels and to calibrate analytical methods. This paper also reminds that keel properties and boundary conditions are of key importance when simulating keel – structure interaction, regardless of the method and scale.
