Abstract: In this paper, the dispersion relation of water waves progressing in the grease-pancake ice mixture at the early stage of pancake ice formation was discussed based on experimental data. Experiments were conducted in the Arctic Environmental Test Basin at HSVA (Hamburg Ship Model Basin, Germany) as a part of RECARO Project funded by EU committee. The experiments reported in this paper were performed to make the effects of the reflection as less as possible. And also, data which can be regarded as being free from the effects of the reflection were used in the data processing. Such experimental and processing procedure ensures that the dispersion relation of the incident waves in the grease-pancake ice mixture at the early stage of pancake ice formation was discussed. The experimental results showed that the wave number in the grease-pancake ice mixture ofwaves with lower frequency is close to that of waves on the mass-loaded water, and as the frequency increases the wave number becomes smaller than that in open water. This tendency can be explained by the theoretical dispersion relation of waves under elastic plates.
