Resistance of Anchored Production Ship to Action of Broken (Managed) Ice

Abstract: Environmental loads on anchored ships in the Barents Sea governing the mooring system (MS) design come from wave and sea ice actions. It is known that the turret-moored FPU can best resist loads when positioned head on towards the incoming actions, As actions from unmanaged sea ice may be excessive for practical design of MS, ice management (breaking) may be needed to reduce the loads to acceptable level. However, even when managed, loads resulting from the broken ice field may be excessive for the MS, in particular during icevaning situations. To estimate broken ice action (global force and moment) on the FPU hull and, then to MS, the method of statistical summation of collision impulses (ice floe to ship hull) is used in this paper. The required statistical data are based on the ice tests of the Russian Arctic-class ships and nuclear icebreakers in the Yenisei Bay in the 70-ies. The paper deals with time domain computer simulations of the turret-moored ship ice-vaning in broken ice. The above propositions both may be satisfied by means the proper FPU course-vaning control which may be provided by the turret optimal longitudinal position or thrusters.
