Abstract: Barents 2020 is a joint project between Russian and Norwegian scientists and engineers, initiated and funded by the Norwegian Foreign Ministry, supported by the Russian Foreign Ministry and with funding also from Russian and Norwegian industry. The objective of the project is to secure the same safety level in the Barents as in the North Sea. The project has finished phase 3 where one of seven working groups has reviewed applicable offshore standards for the design of offshore units against ice loads in the Barents Sea, with the objective to agree on common practice and standards. The main conclusion of the project is to use ISO 19906 as the basic standard for design and operations of stationary units in the Barents Sea. Currently the main focus in the Barents Sea is in deeper waters so floating structures are preferred over fixed structures. The project has identified several shortcomings of the ISO 19906 especially applicable to floating structures in ice. The working group has recommended an approach to remedy the shortcomings.
