Abstract: In order to understand the dominant factors of ice physical properties on ice thermodynamics and mechanics, the in-situ observat ions of ice growth and decay processes were performed in Reservo ir Hongqipao, in Northeastern China. During the observation, three ice samples have been extracted from ice cover in three ice phases, i. e. the fast ice-growth phase, the steady icegrowth phase and the ice-decay phase. Ice crystals, air bubbles shape and distr ibution within ice and ice density have been observed based these ice sample. The findings of this study are: the crystal in ice upper section (from 0 to 24 cm) was granular, the other parts in ice was columnar, the average grain size from 5 mm in ice upper section increases to 18 mm near bottom and keep a similar pat tern from the fast ice-growth phase to the steady ice-growth phase; The shape of air bubbles in the ice upper section was sphere with 0.3 mm in diameter and higher concentrat ion; and the shape o f the bubbles in the middle and lower sections was cylinder with 10-70 times diameter in length and their concentration were lower than that in upper section. The sizes of air bubble decreased from fast ice-growth phase to steady icegrowth phase although their concentrations were increasing. The measured ice density was almost same in the ice growth phases, but it was decreasing with the increasing of air bubbles within ice during the ice-decay phase.
