Abstract: Based on the field test data, constitutive relation of river ice is given in this paper. Adopting the failure criterion of Ralston, finite element model of river ice loads on piers is built by LS-DYNA software, so as to simulate bending fracture process of river ice. Besides, this paper analyzes the distribution form of ice loads and the failure modes of river ice (including the ice crack development), finds the time-history curves of ice loads and the timehistory curves of displacement on top of piers. Moreover, the field test data of Songhua River Bridge have been compared and analyzed. As to the failure modes of river ice, crackdevelopment, time-history curves of ice loads, and time-history curves of displacement, the test data accord highly with the theoretical analysis results. The research results of the paper provide the important basis for ice-resistant design of bridge piers in this region.
