Abstract: Lake water body under a complete ice cover is generally a quiet environment. This quietness is occasionally broken by natural and man-made sounds. Natural sources are wind load on the ice sheet, gas bubble formation, and thermal and mechanical cracking of the ice. Man made sound are due to on-ice traffic, from walking to snowmobiles. A measurement programme is ongoing on the frequency-amplitude level of sound under frozen lakes in Finland. Results from the first winter campaign in 2009-2010 are presented for the sound level with recognized sources. Attempts are also made to connect the sound signals to lake ice cover physical processes.
