Refined Analytical Equations for Probabilistic Description of Iceberg Threats

Abstract: A number of quantitative characteristics can be used as a measure of iceberg threats to an offshore platform. For a prescribed time interval, among those are (i) the probability of platform collision with an arbitrary iceberg, (ii) the probability of impact of an iceberg which kinetic energy (equally, mass, velocity, draft, etc. ) is not less then a given value, (iii) the load leve l that will not be exceeded with a given probability, and others. In a paper, a model is used that handles a flow of icebergs randomly arriving into the area of a platform location, rather than the modified flow of icebergs impacting the platform. It is shown that the approach used makes it poss ible to produce more accurate equations for calculating aforementioned characteristics. Furthermore, it can be used as a tool for deriving modification rules for probability distributions of iceberg flow parameters. It has been found out that the modification rules can differ from each other depending on the iceberg drift model chosen for the given area. Earlier, such equations were treated as universal.
