Abstract: The equipment of modern icebreakers with azimuth pods as the basic propulsion system opens the possibility of overcoming the hummocked ice during the astern motion. As opposed to irruption motion, in this case icebreaker with slow speed hacks the passage through the hummock. During the motion azimuth pods screws mill the ice constantly, helping its destruction. This paper contains the results of theoretical investigations of this process with regard to various propulsion systems of modern icebreakers and ice-going vessels. These results have been compared with the data of model tests carried out in Krylov shipbuilding research institute and Aker Arctic.
