Abstract: In the present context, it cannot be denied than climate change is transforming precipitation events so they are each time more and more extreme. Society demands effective awareness towards natural hazards in order to avoid its severe consequences. Early-warning and monitoring systems must be a key tool to prevent personal and economic losses. Computer advances in the management of large amounts of data and hydraulic modelling have enabled the implementation of the first real-time hydrological forecasting systems. On this paper, technical features, input data, performances, advantages and obstacles to operation of different systems are described. A turning point on flood management and forecasting, analogous to recent developments in weather prediction might be just around the corner.
