Abstract: Waves propagating beneath a continuous ice sheet floating on deep water impact obliquely on a vertical wall to which the ice is frozen, such as may be found along the margins of an ice-covered fjord or alongside an ice jetty or wharf. The strains generated in the ice by the incoming ice-coupled waves near the wall are investigated to determine whether they are of sufficient magnitude to fracture the ice. An equivalent calculation is done for the strain field when a tide crack is present adjacent to the wall. In each case, the ice is modelled as an Euler-Bernoulli thin plate (Fung, 1965).
