Abstract: Shapes such as waterline ice breaking cones have changed the underlying assumptions of traditional keel failure models. This paper discusses previous keel failure models and uses data from Confederation Bridge to support the need for a new model that incorporates shape into the formula. Three analysis tools from Confederation Bridge support the need for a new model: Statistical results compare different parameters used in failure models, pressure panels allow an analysis of pressure distributions and visual observations from video cameras confirm failure mechanics.
