Abstract: Random arrangements of ice floes in the MIZ (Marginal Ice Zone) are simulated using stochastic simulation based on the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. A method to generate initial samples is presented and we make empirical measurements of the burn in time of the chain. We establish practical bounds to determine how many samples are required to produce results which are independent and we calibrate the samples from the simulation in terms of the concentration and the number of floes.
