Abstract: This paper presents first results from a system which is currently being developed to predict sea ice conditions in the Arctic Ocean on short time scales. Remote sensing data are assimilated to a dynamic-thermodynamic numerical sea ice model to obtain the best estimate of initial conditions for a forecast. The forecast includes information useful for ship routing purposes through the Arctic Ocean. The results show improvements in the sea ice concentration fields when satellite data are assimilated.
