Abstract: The offshore coastal strip of the Finnish bay fails under the action of currents, waves and ice. The ice accumulates on the slope of a bank as an iсe heap, under which there is freezing of the sloping ground and step-by-step creep of the frozen ground together with the ice on the slope. The outcome is that the ground is pulled down from the slope and the destruction of a beach. The purpose of the present paper is the examination of the effect of ice on the coast of the Finnish bay caused by hummocks and ice. Estimates of both the volume and height of a mound of ice and the freezing soil thickness under the ice mound are given. The stability of the ice mound with the lay of the freezing soil on the slope of a beach is considered, and the volume of soil displaced on a slope in the case of ice mound slippage is determined. Alternative coastal protection structure profiles are considered for which the ice loads are determined, in addition to the loads and the effects of an ice mound on the slope of a beach.
