Abstract: Application of a long-term hindcast wave climate recently developed by Baird for the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman to prediction of longshore sand transport rates at several locations along Omani coastline of Al Batinah is presented. Model results are analyzed to show contributions from various wave components and the inter-annual variability in longshore sand transport rate and direction. Model predictions are verified using historic shoreline change and corresponding erosion/accretion volumes between 1972 and 2008 obtained from comparison of satellite imageries. The role of harbours and recharge dams on erosion of Al Batinah shoreline is discussed. The presented information is expected to support both erosion hazard planning and mitigation efforts on Al Batinah coastline.
