Abstract: Ice conditions in the Upper Niagara River affect hydropower generation in winters. Understanding ice processes in the Upper Niagara River is essential for operating the New York Power Authority and the Ontario Power Generation generation stations efficiently. The primary power generation loss is caused by the lake ice runs that could jam in the Tonawanda channel on the U.S. side, which has been studied extensively. This paper presents an exploratory model study to show the potential effects of anchor ice during a freeze-up ice run on power operation. Issues on the model applications are discussed. Existing anchor ice studies are reviewed. Research needs to further understand the mechanism of the anchor ice process is proposed.
