Abstract: Hydraulic resistance due to vegetation is a fundamental aspect of river engineering and management. As it is well known, vegetation obstructs the streamflow area, reducing the velocity and thus increasing water levels and the risk of flooding. Although many efforts have been made to estimate vegetation resistance, few studies are devoted to validating and comparing the literature models. In this research, laboratory tests were carried out to validate the roughness coefficients given by literature equations for two arboreal species present along the banks and floodplains of the Piave River in Italy. The material and dimensions of vegetation on a laboratory scale were defined from the mechanical properties of these species. The results highlight the performance of the models and suggest the ones that best represent the experimental measurements.
