Abstract: The present paper investigates frictional exchange flows through the Burlington Ship Canal in the context of two-layer internal hydraulics and laboratory experiments. Previous analytical solutions to exchange flow problems have often ignored frictional and/or non-linear inertial effects. As a result, the applicability of such solutions is fairly limited. To this end, a new analytical approach has been proposed by directly integrating the fully non-linear hydraulic equation with both interfacial and bottom friction included. The resulting exchange flow solutions are consistent with both laboratory experiments and field measurements in the Burlington Ship Canal.
