Abstract: Beaches are an important part of the culture and economy of California. An estimated 550 million people visit California's public beaches annually for a total economic benefit estimated to be over $27 billion (State of California 1999).The City of Huntington Beach (City) in Southern California experienced beach closures over an extended period of the summer of 1999 due to high levels of ocean water contamination relative to state ocean water quality standards. The maximum spatial extent of contamination was not continuous, but rather was concentrated mainly along a portion of Huntington State Beach (HSB).
