Prediction of Water Quality for the Three Gorges Reservoir

Abstract: The Three Gorges Project (TGP) in china, as a worldwide famous hydropower project, is successfully under construction, the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) will be a typical channel one with a length more of 600km and a average width of 1.1km. As so for, the water quality at the reservoir reach remains good in general. In order to predict the impact of TGP on the water quality of TGR, a one-dimensional flow and water quality model has been studied and developed to simulate the general change of flow and water quality after and before TGP is built. In this paper, taken BOD5 as an example, the detail research on the model parameters (mainly including roughness coefficient, decay rate K1 of BOD5 and longitudinal dispersion coefficient Ex) are carried out. A series of empirical and semi-empirical formulas of the model parameters are proposed which consider the great change of flow condition and river shape after TGR is built. It is shown that the calculation results by the model are fit better the field measurement. The water quality for TGR is predicted with the model. The study of the BOD5 indicates that although the flow turbulence and pollutant decay rate will decrease somewhat after TGR is built, the pollutants will stay for a longer time of period due to the slow down of the flow velocity, and the decay capacity of pollutant will increase. The water quality will be improved after the building of TGP.
