Abstract: In many cases man is too close to rivers with his use of land. Especially in urban areas, settlements, industrial areas and infrastructure facilities are concentrated on the natural flood plains of rivers. For this reason, each year vast sums of money have to be given out for the personal and communal damages caused by floods. Where the natural water retention in the catchment is insufficient, constructional precautions, organisatorial and socially co-ordinated defences must be instigated to close the gap, in order to reduce the level of damage.
