Abstract: China Yangtze River closure at the TGP (Three Gorges Project) was already successfully realized on Nov. 8,1997. This article addresses chiefly the research findings on those key technical problems achieved by the Yangtze River Scientific Research Institute. Studies were firstly emphasized for the diversion channel to reveal flood discharge and provide an artificial course for navigation. Consequently, in order to avoid severe collapse found at the head of advancing dike, an adequate measure, namely the horizontally pre-dumping bottom cushion, was introduced for reducing the closure water depth, to mitigate harmfulness. Also, research efforts were made relating to the drifting characteristics of the materials when dumping bottom cushion, and for selecting of the pre-narrowed closure gap width as well as navigation conditions during construction period. This success came from a series of the monographical studies in the past40 years, thereby resolved all the troubles and dangers inherent to the greatest closure work in the world with water depth 60m and design discharge14 000~19 400m3/s. These research findings have demonstrated to be very important and well effective by hydraulic models in the YRSRI's experimental base.
