Abstract: To optimize the structural size of the transition section, the hydraulic model experiment was conducted through numerous experiments. The velocity distributions in the transition section were measured and the head loss at varying condition was determined, also the flow regimes were observed during experiment. Based on the measured data and observed phenomena, the factors influencing the flow regime, head loss and velocity distribution were analyzed and the transition section of the Yellow River Diversion Project was optimized, as a result, the quantity of the transition section can be reduced by 20% of the original design and the flow regime was improved greatly.
