Hydraulics of Tower Intakes

Abstract: Tower intakes are used for receiving water from a reservoir to a transmission line either by gravity or pressurized. A tower intake was constructed in the Camlidere Dam located approximately 60km north-west of Ankara to convey water by a transmission line comprised of a combination of a tunnel, steel pipe line, and pre-stressed concrete pipe line to Ivedik Water Treatment Plant on the north-west outskirts of Ankara. The maximum capacity of the transmission line is 550,000 m`3/day. The tower intake consists of similar two parts, each having two vertical shafts one of which to be used to enter water from the reservoir and the other one to be used as a pressure reduction by a gate. Whatever the discharge in the transmission line is, when the water level of the reservoir increases greater than 970 m, the pressure is reduced by partial operation of pressure reduction gate. To be on the safe side, pressure reduction shaft water level is operated around 965 m to assure a safety margin for the control process which is necessary to avoid the overloading of transmission line. In this study, relations are presented among reservoir water level, pressure reduction gate opening, and transmission line discharge, obtained from a scaled model.
