Abstract: The investigation of coupled dam-reservoir system, subjected to dynamic loads, calls for the use of discrete techniques. This paper reports on the development of a FEM procedure. The approach is formulated entirely in the time domain to be extensible to non-linear problem. The dynamic response of a gravity dam is presented in time domain considering water compressibility and absorption effects of hydrodynamic waves at the reservoir boundary. Results show that the earthquake response of gravity dam is increased by dam-water interaction and decreased by reservoir boundary absorption. It also obtains that the reservoir boundary absorption greatly reduces the maximum hydrodynamic pressure when quasi-resonance of the dam-reservoir system occurs.
