Abstract: As one of the important permanent flood discharge building, operating frequently under high water head and big discharge, the safety of the Three Gorges Project's deep outlets is seriously concerned. By model test of two hydraulic model of the deep outlet whose scale is 1:35 and 1:20 respectively, some physical parameters were measured such as flow appearance¡¢ pressure distribution¡¢wind speed of vent pipe and concentration of entrained air. A configuration of deep outlet with aerator was recommended resulting from comparison of some factors including of the height of step, the slope of open chute and the diameter of vent pipe etc. The test data from different-scale models indicated that the small-scale model test can provide helpful data about the form of aerator¡¢the height of step and the slope of open chute section. The data about diameter of vent pipe¡¢the side wall and the height of cover board which may be installed must be obtained by the large-scale model test. The main reason is that on the different scale models, water flow velocity is different and the entraining capability of water flow does not conform. The scale effect about flow appearance and ventilation rate of different scale models will be discussed in the paper.
