Abstract: A reliable prediction of local scour depth related to hydrological characteristics such as peak discharge, and the time correspond to reach the equilibrium scour depth is very essential for the stability analysis and efficient design of bridge pier foundation. A model to predict the local scour depth with time has been proposed in this paper. Comprehensive experimental program was carried out using a cylindrical pier under clear-water conditions with uniform bed materials. M. S Yalins (1977) theory was implied for the calculation of sediment transport rates around the bridge pier incorporating the time development bed shear stress. The predicted results using the proposed model gives good agreement with experimental results.
