Abstract: This paper presents a numerical study of the flow field of a horizontal intake in the absence of rotational effects. The critical condition is predicted from a continuous zero pressure line from the free surface to the intake. The results introduce a criterion for critical condition based on Froude number. The experimental data show the validity of this assumption for Fr <1.0. The critical condition in small flow rates is therefore a function of the flow regime and hydraulic parameters and not random circulations and non-uniformities
