Abstract: The clear water flow field and the muddy water flow field in the Sand Funnel are measured, and the difference of them shows that the flow field characteristics in the Sand Funnel are beneficial to sediment sinking and transporting. It is typical three-dimensional flow in the funnel chamber. Tangential velocity sustains the vortex intensity of the funnel chamber, radial velocity is benefit to transport sediment to the center, and axial velocity is benefit to the sediment sinking, so the Sand Funnel is successful in sediment disposal. At the same time, the velocity distribution and the sediment transport law are studied in this paper. The results of study show that the Sand Funnel had many advantages, such as high sand interception rate, little water consumption, and so on. It should be widely used in practice, and the engineering practices show that the Sand Funnel has good desilting effectiveness. Prototype observation indicates that its average flushing discharge is 3% of inlet canal discharge, and the sand disposal rate is 100% for the sand that the grain diameter is over 0.5mm, and it is over 90% for the sand that the grain diameter is less 0.5mm.
