Abstract: The investigation shows that some soil foundations are almost uniform while others are of two-layered or even multi-layered structures. Seepage problems that may emerge in the dyke foundation during flood seasons include piping, soil flow and heaving. The seepage field under typical boundary and hydraulic conditions for each category is simulated with a finite element method to illustrate possible engineering problems caused by seepage. Treatment measures for different earth dykes are suggested accordingly. Numerical simulation is further carried out to demonstrate how the treatment measures can improve the stability of the foundation. On the basis of the stratigraphy of the foundation, seepage distribution under design flood level, and construction techniques for treatment, the soil foundations are classified into six categories.
