Abstract: The analysis on the effects and results of the sand mining on riverbed has been carried out based on some case studies for the Yangtze River. It is absolutely correct to prohibit illegal sand mining in the riverbed of the middle and lower course of the Yangtze River completely at present. The sand mining in the riverbed of the Yangtze River in mess makes harm to the riverbed stability, the flood control and the shipping and communications in the middle-lower reach of the Yangtze River in addition to the public security over the Yangtze River. It is unavoidable to make some sand mining to meet the requirement on the riverbed stability and the channel improvement from a long-term point of view. However, only the sand mining, which is in a scientific and orderly way based on the studies of the fluvial process in the Yangtze River and the program of the sand-gravel mining, can turn the harms of sedimentation into benefits to serve the sustainable development in the area.
