Abstract: Turbulence measurements of a supercritical flow were conducted by making use of a laser Doppler anemometer (LDA) for the first time. Additionally, a subcritical flow was also measured for the purpose of the comparison. The velocity profiles can be described well by the log-wake law. The value of a wake-strength parameter in the case of the supercritical flow is larger than that of the subcritical flow. The distributions of turbulence intensities in the streamwise, vertical and spanwise directions are described well by the empirical formulae which were proposed by Nezu (1977) in steady open-channel flows. The loop properties in supercritical flow is almost similar to those in subcritical flow.
