Abstract: The secondary circulation in open-channel bends largely determines the bottom topography. In the depth-integrated flow equations, it is often described by the “Rozovskii model”, which does not account for the interaction between the downstream velocity and the secondary circulation. A model for their vertical profiles is presented that accounts for this interaction. Furthermore, whereas the “Rozovskii model” uniquely depends on the Chezy friction coefficient C, the presented model also depends on the curvature ratio H/R, on the normalized transversal velocity gradient, and on the Froude number Fr. The model results agree well with experimental data for a strongly curved flow.
