Abstract: In order to analyze the hydrodynamic characteristics and turbulent structures of depth-varying unsteady open channel flows, a numerical calculation of unsteady open-channel flows was first carried out by using a low Reynolds-number k-model, involved with both an anisotropic turbulence model and VOF method. The distributions of ensemble-averaged velocity, turbulence intensity and Reynolds shear stress have been calculated in the whole flow depth from the viscous sublayer to the free surface. The values of these calculations agree well with LDA data of Nezu et al. (1997, ASCE). Furthermore, an unsteadiness effect on the shear stress and a spatial structure of loop properties in depth-varying unsteady flows have been calculated and discussed.
