Abstract: An experimental investigation was conducted to study flow distributions in a series of riser ports of a marine outfall structure when the structure is subject to intrusion from salt water through some of the risers. Not only is it important that outfalls should be designed to suitable operation discharges that are capable of flushing sea water from the structure, but also that this discharge should be present long enough to completely purge all the risers of saline intrusion in order to ensure the full intended dilution performance of the diffusers. The study was principally aimed at establishing measures of time required to completely purge sea outfalls of intruded sea water and the optimum effluent discharges needed for such purging. This paper outlines experiments mainly conducted in the later stages of this study. In particular simulation of the effects of wave action on saline intrusion was attempted and some of the complex problems associated with this aspect of the performance of submarine outfalls were looked at.
